Our Rescue Mission

VCNC Rescue's mission is to extend a helping hand to both homeless Vizslas and individuals who need to surrender their Vizsla companions. As an affiliate of the Vizsla Club of Northern California, a non-profit organization, we are committed to this cause.

We foster strong partnerships with local shelters and gladly collaborate with other rescue groups. Our focus lies solely on the well-being of the dogs in need, rather than dwelling on human differences.

Every dog in our program undergoes a thorough examination, including a heartworm test, and is kept up to date with necessary vaccinations. Additionally, all dogs are spayed or neutered. We ensure that any available information regarding a particular dog is shared with potential adopters. Our aim is to be transparent and find the most suitable home for each dog, considering their background and personality.

On occasion, we encounter dogs with special needs, and we exert tremendous efforts to ensure they are placed in appropriate homes. Fortunately, there are compassionate individuals in the world who are willing to embrace dogs with health, age, or behavioral challenges.

For contacts outside of Northern California, please view a list of VCA Regional Rescue Contacts.

Types of Vizslas in Rescue

We do not frequently get puppies into Rescue. The majority of dogs are at least 1-year-old, with many  over 5-years-old. It's important to note that a Vizsla is considered  puppy like until they are at least 3 years old, and often become even a better dog between the ages of 5 and 7. Vizslas have a long lifespan, and it's not uncommon to hear of a 14-year-old Vizsla still eagerly requesting their daily walk.

VCNC Rescue Application

Process

When we have a Vizsla needing a home, we check through the applications of people on the waiting list and try to match the Vizsla to the home most suitable for him/her. When we feel we have a good match, we phone the applicant to arrange a meeting between the applicant and the Vizsla. The Rescue Vizsla may still be at its owner's home in which case you can meet it there. Or it might be in foster care in which case you would go to the foster care home to meet the dog. If the placement is agreeable to both sides, an Adoption Agreement will be signed along with a minimum donation to the VCNC Rescue Fund of $350 or more (senior dogs are often less).

This donation is applied to expenses generated in re-homing Vizslas. Some of our Rescue Vizslas, particularly those which have been neglected or abused, drain the Rescue Funds because of necessary expenses for surgery, inoculations, altering and long-term foster care during rehabilitation.

We ask that your donation be based on your financial situation, so that all homeless Vizslas can be helped through Breed Rescue. Generous donations will help us to carry on our rescue work and will be gratefully accepted.

Thank you for your donation which goes to support Vizslas in need.

Surrendering a Vizsla into Rescue

Please contact the closest Rescue Coordinator for more information about surrendering a Vizsla to Rescue. They will request that all AKC registration papers, health records, and any other paperwork relating to the dog be provided to the Rescue volunteer at the time of transfer. We also request that all dogs coming into our program be neutered or spayed and be current on all shots, whenever possible.
